When I decided to do the #SquishyFaceCrew book project it was because I hoped to fill my schedule with shoots just like this one. Not only does Doug have an adorable little squishy face but he also had me in stitches with his antics.

Before I’d even taken my first photo Doug was playing the sand is lava. I wish I’d made a video because it was HILARIOUS! I was glad he’s only little because anything bigger moving that fast and so out of control would have been terrifying. This is the face of a naughty French Bulldog who’s been asked to be still when all he wants to do is zoom!

Did you see this photo on my Facebook or Instagram before I cleaned all the sand and grot off his face? Who knew that one day my job would require me to do that? haha

I love this photo so much I squeed when I took it.

“Are you being served?”

This photo pretty much sums up the shoot for me. It has a full double page spread in the album his owner bought. I’ll post a flip through on my Instagram in a day or two.

A 20×30″ canvas of this image is currently sitting in my office and I may struggle to part with it.

ALL OF THE HANDSOME!

I’m not really sure what he was looking at or for but I thought it was a nice image. And his little piglet butt is pretty cute too.

Before we adopted Angel (our far from angelic Staffy), about 11 years ago, I wanted a French Bulldog. I remember writing to breeders asking for a fawn one with a black mask. (Understandably, not many of them wrote back!) Doug is exactly what I had in mind. I won’t lie, since meeting him I live in hope that one day his owner will decide to give him to me. May as well dream here as in bed, right? Let’s just say this photo is of him not wanting to go home because he loves me too. Who cares if it’s the truth, it’s a beautiful story with a sad ending!

I had so much fun at this session. I drove home feeling pretty sure that I was really going to enjoy making this book. If you own a squishy faced dog and would like to take part you can find all the info on this page: https://www.ruthlessphotos.com/squishyfacecrew-book/

two cocker spaniels sitting between owner's legs at park

Benson and Milly | Sydney Dog Photographer

July 20, 2017 | Leave a reply

It’s been quiet around here while I was having some work done on my websites. Apologies if you subscribe by email and received old posts to your inbox multiple times, it wasn’t my doing! I’m back now and I’ve stockpiled a bunch of posts for you so get ready to be bombarded with dog photos again.

I first met Benson and Milly back in May. There was much texting back and forth trying to decide if the weather was suitable that day and eventually we chose to go ahead. Unfortunately the light was really average so I suggested we shoot again when it was nicer. It wasn’t a total waste of time though, this first image is the one they chose for a large acrylic wall art piece. (It arrived from my supplier today and looks soooooo good!)

We got the last of the autumn leaves, which were exactly the same colour as Benson’s coat.

Milly looks pretty good amongst them too. Check out the length of her eyelashes! Much envy!

I wouldn’t say it was a bad choice to go ahead with the first shoot because having to meet up again meant I got to hang out with these lovely dogs and their even lovelier owners a second time. That pretty light was just the icing on the cake.

With the help of two people I managed to get a shot of them sitting together. It was no easy feat!

Winter in Sydney isn’t half bad.

I enlisted my helpers again (who also happen to be Benson and Milly’s owners) to get the dogs to sit together for a family photo. There was a third helper beside me with their ball. #teamwork

And finally they got to do their favourite thing, FETCH!

The sunset was intense and as it filtered through the trees I was so happy that I’d invested the extra time to get the job done right.

If you’d like to check out Benson and Milly’s album you can see a digital flip through on my Instagram.

These two are the fifth matching pair of dogs that I’ve photographed this year and I have three more pairs booked in for sessions. Being slightly OCD that really pleases me! Do you have two dogs of the same breed that you’d like to have photographed? Get in touch, I’d love to create some memories for you to treasure.

Happy Take Your Dog to Work Day!

June 23, 2017 | Leave a reply

Happy Take Your Dog To Work Day! I have these four misfits snuggling under my desk today (and every day). I’m lucky that I work from home when I’m not out photographing other people’s dogs so this lot have a pretty charmed life. They did ok for a bunch of dumped dogs.

Pack of four rescue bull breeds, pit bull type dogs, sitting on a rock

This photo is from my last book, Tails of Sydney, which features over 100 other dogs that I don’t own. There are still some copies available on my website if you haven’t got yourself one yet.

Did you get to bring your dog to work today? Head over to my Instagram or Facebook post and show me!

two black pugs making funny faces

Ref and Serina | Sydney Dog Photography

June 20, 2017 | Leave a reply

You know you have an awesome boss when they buy you a Ruthless Photos gift voucher for Christmas. Kristy has such a boss (who also happens to be a previous client of mine) and I got to photograph her gorgeous Pugs, Ref and Serina, a few weeks ago. It was the first weekend in Winter, so it was crisp but the light was beautiful.

When I leaned down to say my hellos Ref went the kind of crazy that I thought was reserved for Staffies – who knew Pugs could spin so fast?! (All the Pug owners are probably mouthing the word “me” at their screen right now!) So we started with Serina, while Ref composed himself.

Kristy said in her questionnaire that “she gets the snaggle tooth and sometimes her tongue just pokes out”, to my utter glee she actually did one or the other for every single photo!

Serina is almost 6 years old. Kristy said “I adopted her in September 2016 and she was a very scared girl. She still gets very unsure in noisy and overwhelming situations”. But, like a good little Pug, she was all about the food and as long as I wasn’t trying to put her on any evil benches we got along just fine.

Yup. Adorable.

Ref is almost 7 years old and has lived with Kristy’s family since he was a puppy. He’s no stranger to the camera and has perfected the wide-eyed puppy dog look.

He can also touch his forehead with his tongue. Impressive.

There wasn’t much faith in my ability to get a photograph of both dogs together (mostly from me) but thanks to a container of precious cheese, we got this.

I don’t even know who we thank for this one. Some weird Pug god of derp!

two black pugs with whacky expressions

While Ref does some solid posing …

… he also does disgruntled loaf of bread impersonations.

black pug lying on grass looking like a loaf of bread

Yeah, I don’t even know what was going on here. I guess her lead looked like fun or something.

The face you make when you realise everyone’s laughing at you. (Or because it’s a day that ends in y.)

We went in search of Autumn leaves and weren’t disappointed. Ref was thrilled.

For a dog who was described as having no training, I think Serina did pretty awesome. She’s quite the little poser.

black pug standing under tree in park with snaggletooth

Monkey see, monkey do.

It was cold so I brought some hats just in case. (Or maybe just in case I wasn’t the only one who thought Pugs in hats would be funny!)

I was surprised that Kristy didn’t use her voucher to book a spot in my #SquishyFaceCrew book. I asked her why and she said she wasn’t sure that the dogs would be confident in unfamiliar surroundings or would hold a stay. They were completely fine to work with, so if you’re reading this and had the same concerns but your dog loves food you should go ahead and apply! Ref and Serina will make an appearance in the book anyway – how could they not?!

If you’re a Pug lover you should check out Kristy’s website The Pug Diary. It’s a wealth of information about all things Pug.

Bruno does the ‘bra | Sydney Dog Photos

June 9, 2017 | Leave a reply

It’s not often that I feel like getting up before sunrise on a Sunday morning and since it’s the one day of the week that Dave doesn’t have to get up at 4.45am it’s quite amazing that these photos exist! Sometimes I get the urge to take photos just for me. We’d done a session at this location for Tails of Sydney and I loved the pictures so much I wanted to go back with my own dog some day … so we did. Being the difficult subject that he is I was only hoping for one great shot, but Bruno did some of his best work that morning. Look at him actually looking at the camera? I think he’s finally getting the hang of this modelling thing. Maybe there’s a doggy version of this list that he can aspire to be on.

I only brought one lens so there’s not a tonne of variety here but I did well to narrow it down to just these few favourites to share …

I only included this one cause it’s ridiculousness makes me laugh.

The money shot, courtesy of something behind me that got his attention.

It’s a long weekend here in Sydney so I borrowed a puppy from Fetching Dogs for the weekend. Partially for me. Partially for Bruno. It’s a very nice perk of the job to be able to just get a puppy fix to feed the soul when you need it. My personal instagram (@ruthlessthings) will be a good source of #puppyspam over the weekend if you care to indulge.
